Red Thread is fairly easy to identify when it has infected your lawn because, if you look closely, the infected grass blades take on a pinkish red color. Red Thread is common on Kentucky bluegrass and fine fescue turf throughout Michigan when weather conditions favor disease development.
Red Thread is most active when the air temperature is between 65 and 75 degrees or during periods of wet or humid weather. Red thread can infect the grass blades and move throughout your lawn quickly. Nutritional imbalances can also contribute to Red Thread infection. For instance, low levels of nitrogen or calcium can make your lawn more susceptible to infection from Red Thread. Even when you are on a regularly scheduled lawn fertilization program, if the weather conditions are favorable, Red Thread infections can occur between treatments periods.

The first indication you may see if your lawn is infected by Red Thread is circular brown spots throughout your lawn. If you look at the grass blades even closer you will see pinkish strands growing from the grass blades. These strands, or threads, are the mycelia of the fungus. Occasionally, the mycelia will grow in a circular pattern on the infected grass blade. These threads are easily broken off and spread by the wind, mowing equipment, or direct contact to surrounding grass plants. From a distance, a lawn infected with Red Thread will have a spotty appearance.
How to Control Red Thread
As with many turf diseases, Red Thread activity is highly correlated with certain weather conditions. When the weather is right for Red Thread the best you can do is apply fertilizer, if it hasn’t been done in a while, and apply one or two fungicide treatments. This will limit the spread of Red Thread to any more of your lawn and help the infected grass plants recover quicker.
In southeast Michigan Red Thread can be active any time between late May and early October. So, constant monitoring of your lawn is necessary throughout most of the growing season to watch for any signs of Red Thread infection.
